Comparing Adhesive Underlayment To Traditional Underlayment

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Your Roof’s Underlayment is a barrier between the roof deck and the outer materials and acts as a protective layer to keep your home dry and free of moisture. There are plenty of choices out there when it comes to underlayment options, but self adhered underlayments have become increasingly popular and for good reason! You might be wondering, well what is roof underlayment and why should I consider self adhered options?

What Is Roof Underlayment

adhesive underlayment

Roof underlayment is a material that is applied directly to the roof deck, but underneath your roof covering (such as shingles) and protects your home from the elements and unwanted moisture.

There are plenty types of underlayments available, from asphalt felt, hot mop tar, bitumen torch-on, and of course, self-adhered.

The Benefits of Self-Adhered Underlayments

We strongly believe that a product should be able to stand on its strengths, and not bash others in order to prove its worth. So let’s look at what makes self-adhered underlayments so good, compared to some of its rivals

Easy Installation

Asphalt felt is one of the most common materials used for roof underlayment, and installing it is incredibly labor intensive, as it often needs to be cut down to size, nailed into place, and finally all edges and seams need to be taped down to ensure it is waterproof. Torch-on underlayment requires installers to roll out sheets of bitumen and apply heat to the material (often in the form of a propane) torch to persuade the underlayment to stick to the roof.

With self-adhered underlayments, as it sticks down as it is being unrolled, making installation an easy task. A self-adhered underlayment is also pliable and flexible and can be maneuvered into all the valleys, hips, and ridges of your roof, ensuring snug coverage.

Improved Moisture Protection

A self-adhered underlayment has superior moisture protection properties when compared to traditional asphalt felt. This is because asphalt felt has a tendency to wrinkle during installation which increases the likelihood that water will pool on your roof and penetrate the roof barrier below and cause leaks.

Since self-adhered underlayment self-adheres, there’s a minimal need for nails which can create a weak point in your moisture barrier, nor does it require adhesive tape to seal between seams which introduces further weak points.

Increased Durability

When asphalt felt underlayment begins to fail, it is often because it has begun to crack and tear allowing water to pass through. Tag & Stick underlayment has an inherent pliable nature means it is less prone to cracking and tearing, and since it is adhered at every point of contact with your roof, it offers increased wind resistance and strong winds cannot force its way underneath.

Removable And Replaceable

One of the truly unique features of Tag and Stick underlayment is that when the time comes to replace your roof, it can be safely and easily removed without any risk of delaminating the roof deck. This means that fresh underlayment can be put down without the need to repair the deck, leading to an overall cheaper roofing bill.

Hurricane Ready

South Florida is no stranger to tropical storms that create the perfect conditions to stir up a potential hurricane. Hurricanes bring with them strong storm surges, high-velocity winds, and heavy rains, all factors that your underlayment should be ready to face should your roof covering fail.

Tag & Stick’s self-adhered underlayment consists of a two-ply system to offer your roof a combined 115 mils of protection. The top 60 mill layer offers proven and tested mechanical attachment and protection against wind and debris, while the bottom 55 mil layer is responsible for ensuring maximum adhesion to falter even the strongest winds.

South Florida Ready!

South Florida has some pretty strict underlayment requirements, of which, Tag & Stick passes – these requirements are:
